Dear Advance LA Community,
As we embrace the vibrant renewal of Spring, we’re reminded that May is not just a month of blooming flowers but also a time to nurture our mental well-being. In the words of Emily Bronte, “May is the month of expectation, the month of wishes, and the month of hope.”
May holds a special significance as Mental Health Awareness Month—a time when we come together to recognize the importance of mental wellness and break down stigmas surrounding mental health challenges. For young adults with special needs, the journey to independence often comes with unique challenges. That’s why, now more than ever, it’s crucial to prioritize mental health and well-being. From managing academic stress to navigating social relationships and transitioning to the workforce, our community faces a myriad of experiences that can impact mental wellness.
Social interactions play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing mental health, offering emotional support, reducing stress, and creating a sense of belonging. Our Young Adult Summer Program is a fantastic opportunity for young individuals to engage in meaningful social interactions, make lasting friendships, and learn new skills. This program is designed to create a supportive and enriching environment where participants can connect with peers, explore their interests, and develop both personally and socially. Join us this summer to experience the profound benefits of community and growth through shared activities and new friendships.
At Advance LA, our mission remains unwavering—to empower young adults with special needs to lead fulfilling and independent lives. Through personalized support, life skills coaching, and holistic guidance, we’re dedicated to helping each individual thrive in all aspects of their journey.
For more information or to connect with our supportive community, please reach out to us at advancela@thehelpgroup.org.
Hope your May has been filled with growth, self-discovery, and a renewed commitment to mental wellness.
Warm regards,
Heather Humphrey

Advance LA is excited to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, which is observed during the month of May; it aims to bring attention to the mental health needs and challenges faced by young adults as they transition into adulthood. Organizations and communities often use this month to educate, raise awareness, and provide support for young individuals dealing with mental health issues.
Young adults can benefit from developing a range of coping skills to help manage their mental health. Here are some strategies that may be helpful… |

Earlier this month, The Help Group hosted its inaugural Mental Health Matters Breakfast in observance of National Mental Health Awareness Month, demonstrating its commitment to mental health advocacy and support for individuals and families in need. Over 200 community members attended, hearing from a diverse lineup of speakers. Dr. Audra Langley shared insights on creating culturally-responsive, trauma-informed schools, while Danielle Farmer, MSEd, LCSW, discussed adolescent suicide assessment and prevention strategies. Kim Goodman, LCSW, presented W.E. – C.A.R.E. (Wellness, Education, Community, Awareness, Resources, & Engagement) offering self-care strategies for caregivers. We also honored Dr. Lisa Wong, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH), with the Spirit of Hope Award for her commitment and advocacy in the field of mental health.
