The Help Group Shines a Light on Mental Health Awareness Month with Inaugural Mental Health Matters Breakfast Honoring Dr. Lisa Wong
On May 9, 2024, The Help Group hosted its inaugural Mental Health Matters Breakfast in observance of National Mental Health Awareness Month. The event underscored The Help Group’s unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy and support for individuals and families in need.
At The Help Group, our mission is driven by a deep-seated commitment to the well-being of our community’s youth and families. We believe that everyone deserves access to quality mental health care and support, regardless of their circumstances. Through events like the Mental Health Matters Breakfast, we strive to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and provide resources to those in greatest need.
The statistics surrounding mental health in America are staggering. According to recent data:
- • 84 million people have one or more mental health disorders.
- • 34 million individuals are grappling with one or more substance abuse challenges.
- • 31 million people are affected by a major depressive disorder.
- • 20 million individuals are facing anxiety-related issues.
These numbers highlight the significant gap in access to mental health care due to limited resources. And this is why since 1985, The Help Group has collaborated with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and Department of Children Services and other community partners to provide a diverse range of services to underserved individuals in our community, bridging crucial gaps and ensuring access to critical support.
During the event, over 200 attendees from throughout the community heard from a diverse lineup of speakers and presentations. Dr. Lisa Wong, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH), was recognized with the Spirit of Hope Award for her enduring commitment and tireless advocacy in the field of mental health. Dr. Wong’s heartfelt acceptance speech underscored her dedication to supporting the most vulnerable members of the Los Angeles community. She shared, “The work we do is challenging, but profoundly rewarding because of the profound impact it has on people’s lives.”
As a seasoned clinician, her leadership has been instrumental in advancing the mission of The Department of Mental Health, emphasizing compassion and empathy in her work. Dr. Wong’s partnership and steadfast support have enabled The Help Group to expand critical services to those in need, embodying the spirit of hope and inspiring others to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
“When I was service area chief in the Valley, I so appreciated what The Help Group did, everything you stood for, the clients you took in and the lives you changed,” expressed Dr. Wong. “The tremendous impact cannot be undervalued. The theme of today’s event is Pathways to Resilience. In this context, I commend The Help Group for its innovative and dedicated approach to mental health and education.”
In addition to presenting the Spirit of Hope Award to Lisa Wong, Psy.D., Dr. Audra Langley shared insights on creating culturally-responsive, trauma-informed schools, emphasizing healing and inclusivity. Following this, Danielle Farmer, MSEd, LCSW, provided valuable information on adolescent suicide assessment and early prevention strategies, sparking crucial conversations about mental health in young people. Additionally, a powerful personal story of resilience and hope showcased The Help Group’s Full-Service Partnership Program, underscoring the transformative impact of support and community. To cap off the morning, Kim Goodman, LCSW presented W.E. – C.A.R.E (Wellness, Education, Community, Awareness, Resources, & Engagement) FOR THE CAREGIVER, offering important strategies for self-care when caring for others.
At The Help Group we know that events like these serve as critical platforms for community engagement and education on mental health and reinforce the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing mental health challenges. Additionally, recognizing leaders like Dr. Wong for their dedication to mental health advocacy serves to inspire and motivate others to continue the fight for mental health awareness and support within our communities.
Together, let us continue to raise awareness, foster understanding, and support those in our community who are struggling with mental health challenges.
