Dear Help Group Friends & Families,

As April unfolds, I find myself reflecting on Autism Acceptance Month and its significance to The Help Group schools, families, and students we serve. It’s a poignant reminder of the importance of embracing neurodiversity and cultivating a thoughtful society where autistic individuals are celebrated for their unique talents, gifts, and perspectives.

At The Help Group, we are deeply committed to championing autism awareness, acceptance, and understanding. We recognize that our communities flourish when each individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to realize and exceed their limitless potential. April serves as a reminder of our commitment and dedication to creating awareness and promoting autism acceptance. It is also an opportunity to celebrate neurodiversity, embrace individual differences, and advance inclusivity and connectedness throughout the community.

In this spirit of acceptance and celebration, our April newsletter is dedicated to highlighting stories of resilience, understanding, and progress within our community. From inspiring journeys of autistic individuals to innovative programs and initiatives that offer support and acceptance to neurodivergent learners, our goal is to inspire and educate.

As we embark on this journey of raising awareness and promoting acceptance, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support of The Help Group. I leave you with a quote from Maya Angelou that serves as a reminder for each of us to embrace our unique individual differences and encourage others to do the same. “If you’re always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” -Maya Angelou.

Let’s celebrate our unique individual differences and discover how truly amazing we all can be!

Warm regards

Shayne Horan, Ed. D.
Vice President of Schools

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “NEURODIVERGENT-AFFIRMING?”

Written by Dr. Laurie Stephens

Before delving into the broader question of what it means to be neurodivergent-affirming, let’s establish a foundation by defining the key terms. The concept of neurodiversity recognizes the multitude of ways people think, interpret information, and process the world. This encompasses diverse learning styles—auditory, visual, kinesthetic—varied thinking patterns- logical, systematic, empathetic- and a range of approaches to learning, such as project-based or textbook-oriented. For the purpose of this article, I will be specifically referring to autism.

Sometimes, the word neurodiversity is used synonymously with autism, but it is a much broader term than that. Neurodiversity encompasses ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, trauma, OCD, giftedness, intellectual delays and more.

SCHOOLS & PROGRAMS HIGHLIGHTS

Autism Acceptance is about embracing diversity and acknowledging the unique strengths and accomplishments of individuals on the autism spectrum. At Village Glen, we believe in celebrating every achievement, big or small. Recently, we asked some of our students to share their proudest accomplishments, and their responses were truly inspiring. From mastering a new skill to overcoming personal challenges, each accomplishment is a testament to their resilience and determination. We couldn’t be prouder of all of our students and the milestones they continue to reach. We can’t wait to see what their future holds!
